bezoar

Gut-formed mass

A bezoar is a mass of indigestible material—hair, plant fibers, calcium deposits—that accumulates in the stomach or intestines of animals or humans.

Historically prized as antidotes to poison, bezoars from goats and other ruminants were set in gold and kept by royalty.

The word survives mainly in medical contexts and fantasy literature, where bezoars retain their legendary protective properties.
