gallstone
Painful bile pebble
A gallstone is a small, hard mass that forms in the gallbladder, the organ that stores bile used in digestion.
Gallstones develop when substances in bile—typically cholesterol or bilirubin—crystallize and clump together, ranging from grain-of-sand tiny to golf-ball large.
Many people have gallstones without symptoms, but when one blocks a bile duct, the resulting pain can be severe and may require surgical removal of the gallbladder.
