aurochs

Cattle's wild ancestor

Aurochs is an extinct species of wild cattle that once roamed Europe, Asia, and North Africa—the ancestor of modern domestic cattle.

The plural is also aurochs.

The last aurochs died in Poland in 1627.

The word appears most often in historical or ecological contexts: Cave paintings at Lascaux depict aurochs hunts.
