stalagmite

Floor-growing cave formation

A stalagmite is a cone-shaped mineral deposit that rises from the floor of a cave, formed by the slow dripping of mineral-rich water from above.

Stalagmites grow upward, while their counterparts stalactites hang downward from the ceiling.

When they meet, they form a column.
