battle-axe

Medieval chopping weapon

A battle-axe is a large axe designed for combat, with a broad blade meant for cleaving armor and flesh.

The word survives mainly in its figurative sense: a battle-axe is a domineering, aggressive woman, especially an older one: His mother-in-law was a real battle-axe.

The term is derogatory.
