falchion

Medieval cutting sword

A falchion is a broad-bladed sword with a single cutting edge, curved toward the point, used in medieval Europe.

The design—heavier toward the tip—made it effective for slashing.

The word appears mostly in historical fiction and fantasy: The knight drew his falchion and charged.
