housecarl

Viking lord's guard

A housecarl was a professional warrior in the personal retinue of a Scandinavian or Anglo-Saxon lord, especially in the period before the Norman Conquest.

Unlike feudal knights who held land, housecarls were maintained directly by their lord, living in his household and forming an elite bodyguard.

The term appears most often in historical writing about Viking-age and early medieval England: Harold's housecarls formed the core of his army at Hastings.
