bow wave
Ship's frontal displacement
A bow wave is the wave that forms at the front of a ship or boat as it moves through water, spreading outward in a V-shape from the bow.
The term extends to similar phenomena in physics—the wave pattern created when any object moves through a medium faster than the medium's natural wave speed.
The kayak's bow wave disturbed the still lake.
