gazetteers

Geographic name indexes

Gazetteers are geographical reference works that provide information about places—towns, cities, regions, physical features, and the like.

They typically include names, locations, populations, and other relevant data, organized alphabetically like a dictionary.

Historically, gazetteers accompanied atlases to supply the facts that maps couldn't convey.

The term also refers to journalists who write for a gazette, though this usage is now uncommon.
