physical maps
Landform elevation displays
Physical maps show the natural features of terrain—mountains, rivers, valleys, coastlines.
They use color gradients and shading to indicate elevation, typically with green for lowlands rising through yellow and brown to white for peaks.
The physical map showed the Rockies running north to south.
Distinguished from political maps, which emphasize borders and human divisions.
