ashlar

Precise cut stone

Ashlar is stone that has been cut and dressed with squared edges for use in building walls.

Unlike rough fieldstone or rubble, ashlar creates smooth, regular surfaces with tight joints.

The term also describes masonry constructed from such stones: The cathedral's ashlar facade contrasted with the rougher stonework of older buildings.
