Levites

Hebrew priestly tribe

Levites are members of the Hebrew tribe of Levi, one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

In the Hebrew Bible, Levites were set apart for religious service, assisting the priests (who were specifically descendants of Aaron) in Temple duties and rituals.

Unlike other tribes, Levites received no territorial inheritance in the Promised Land but were instead supported by tithes from the other tribes.

The term appears frequently in biblical and Jewish religious contexts.

The Levites were responsible for transporting the Ark of the Covenant.
