arks

Torah scroll cabinets

Arks is the plural of ark, a large vessel or container for preservation.

The most famous is Noah's Ark from the Bible, built to save animals from the flood.

By extension, arks are protective enclosures: the Ark of the Covenant held sacred tablets, and a synagogue's ark houses Torah scrolls.

The arks floated downriver carrying settlers' belongings.
