counterion
Opposing ionic partner
A counterion is an ion that balances the charge of another ion in a solution or compound.
In chemistry, when a charged particle exists in solution, an oppositely charged counterion maintains electrical neutrality: Sodium serves as the counterion to chloride in table salt.
The term appears frequently in discussions of polymers, proteins, and electrochemistry.
