aircraft engine

Propulsion for flight

An aircraft engine is a powerplant designed to propel an airplane, helicopter, or other flying vehicle.

Most are either piston engines driving propellers or jet engines producing thrust directly.

The term distinguishes these from engines in ground vehicles or marine craft, which face different constraints: The aircraft engine must be both powerful and lightweight.
