tank engine
Self-contained train motor
A tank engine is a steam locomotive that carries its own water and fuel in tanks mounted on the engine frame, rather than in a separate tender car pulled behind.
Tank engines are typically smaller and used for shorter runs or shunting work: The branch line was served by a little tank engine.
Thomas the Tank Engine popularized the term for generations of children.
