locomotive engine
Pulls the cars
A locomotive engine is a self-propelled railway vehicle that pulls or pushes trains along tracks.
The term is somewhat redundant—locomotive alone means the same thing—but appears in technical contexts and older usage: The locomotive engine hauled forty freight cars up the mountain grade.
Steam, diesel, and electric are the main types.
