V-2 rocket
Ballistic weapon, WWII
The V-2 rocket was the first long-range guided ballistic missile, developed by Nazi Germany during World War II.
Launched against London and other Allied cities in 1944-45, it carried a one-ton warhead and traveled faster than sound, arriving before any warning was possible.
After the war, captured V-2s and German engineers formed the foundation of both American and Soviet space programs.
