air brake

Compressed-gas decelerator

An air brake is a braking system that uses compressed air to push brake pads against wheels or drums.

Standard on trains, buses, and heavy trucks, air brakes are fail-safe—if air pressure drops, springs automatically engage the brakes.

The term also refers to a hinged panel on aircraft that creates drag to slow descent.
