accent mark

Symbol above letters

An accent mark is a diacritical symbol placed above or below a letter to indicate pronunciation, stress, or distinguish between words.

Common examples include the acute accent in *café*, the grave accent in *è*, and the tilde in *señor*.

English borrows accent marks mainly through foreign loanwords, and they often disappear as words become naturalized: résumé gradually becomes resume.
