IPA
Linguist's transcription system
IPA stands for either the International Phonetic Alphabet—a system of symbols representing speech sounds used by linguists and language learners—or India Pale Ale, a style of beer known for its strong hop flavor and higher alcohol content.
Context usually makes clear which is meant: The dictionary uses IPA for pronunciation versus I'll have an IPA on tap.
The beer sense dominates casual conversation, while the alphabet sense appears in academic and educational contexts.
