romanization

Alphabet system translation

Romanization is the process of converting text from a non-Roman writing system into the Roman alphabet.

Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and Russian all have standardized romanization systems that allow readers unfamiliar with those scripts to approximate pronunciation: The romanization of 北京 is "Beijing".

Different romanization schemes can produce different spellings of the same word, which explains why you might see both "Mao Tse-tung" and "Mao Zedong." (Capitalized Romanization may refer to specific named systems.)
