Warsaw Ghetto

Walled Jewish quarter

The Warsaw Ghetto was a walled-off district in Nazi-occupied Warsaw where Jews were confined from 1940 to 1943—the largest of the Jewish ghettos in German-occupied Europe.

Nearly half a million people were crowded into an area of 1.3 square miles, with mass starvation and deportations to death camps.

The 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, in which Jewish fighters resisted German troops for nearly a month, became a symbol of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust.
