Viet

Hanoi native, briefly

Viet refers to the Vietnamese people or their language.

It appears most often as a combining form: Vietnam, Vietcong, Vietminh.

On its own, Viet was American military slang during the Vietnam War for a Vietnamese person, especially an enemy combatant: We spotted three Viets moving through the jungle.

The standalone use is dated and can carry dismissive connotations.
