GI

Government issue fighter

GI refers to a member of the U.S. armed forces, especially an enlisted soldier.

The term originated as an abbreviation for "government issue" or "galvanized iron," describing standard military equipment, then transferred to the soldiers themselves.

A GI is the ordinary American servicemember: GIs were welcomed home after the war.

As an adjective, it describes military-standard items or practices: GI haircut, GI Bill. (Lowercase gi is a martial arts uniform.)
