North Vietnam

Saigon's wartime adversary

North Vietnam was the communist state occupying the northern half of Vietnam from 1954 to 1976, officially the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

It fought the Vietnam War against South Vietnam and the United States, ultimately prevailing and reunifying the country under communist rule.

The term remains useful historically: My father served two tours in North Vietnam.
