Tonkin

Northern Vietnamese territory

Tonkin is a historical region in northern Vietnam, centered on the Red River delta and including Hanoi.

The name appears most often in connection with the Gulf of Tonkin, the body of water between Vietnam and China, and the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (1964), which authorized U.S. military escalation in the Vietnam War: The Tonkin Gulf incident remains controversial.
