diacritics

Marks on letters

Diacritics are marks added to letters to indicate pronunciation, stress, or meaning distinctions.

English uses few—the occasional accent mark in borrowed words like *café* or *naïve*, the umlaut in *coöperate*.

Other languages depend on them heavily: French cédilles, German umlauts, Spanish tildes.

The editor removed the diacritics from the foreign names.
