shock and awe

Swift dominance through firepower

Shock and awe is a military strategy aimed at overwhelming an enemy through spectacular displays of force, destroying their will to fight before prolonged combat begins.

The term gained currency during the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.

It now applies more broadly to any strategy of swift, dramatic dominance: The company's shock and awe marketing campaign flooded every platform simultaneously.
