Hungarian Revolution
Budapest anti-Soviet revolt
The Hungarian Revolution refers to the 1956 uprising in which Hungarians revolted against Soviet-imposed communist rule, demanding political reform and independence.
The revolt was brutally crushed by Soviet tanks after about two weeks, resulting in thousands of deaths and mass emigration.
The phrase has become shorthand for courageous but ultimately unsuccessful resistance against overwhelming authoritarian force.
