non-alignment

Refusing bloc membership

Non-alignment is the policy of not formally allying with major power blocs or military alliances.

The term emerged during the Cold War to describe nations that refused to side with either the United States or Soviet Union: India was a leader of the non-aligned movement.

The stance implies diplomatic independence rather than neutrality on all issues.
