NATO alliance
Western defense bloc
The NATO alliance is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a military alliance formed in 1949 among Western nations for collective defense.
The phrase is technically redundant—NATO already contains "alliance" in its meaning—but appears frequently in political discourse: The NATO alliance has expanded eastward since the Cold War.
Member nations agree that an attack on one is an attack on all.
