legation
Minister's official residence
A legation is a diplomatic mission ranking below an embassy, or the building housing such a mission.
Historically, countries exchanged legations before establishing full embassies; the term now applies mainly to smaller diplomatic offices.
By extension, legation refers to the staff of such a mission or the act of sending diplomatic representatives: The American legation in Beijing was besieged during the Boxer Rebellion.
