Standard Oil

Broken petroleum giant

Standard Oil was an American oil company founded by John D.

Rockefeller in 1870 that became the dominant force in the petroleum industry, controlling at its peak roughly 90% of U.S. oil refining.

Its aggressive tactics—railroad rebates, predatory pricing, secret deals—made it the symbol of monopoly power and inspired antitrust legislation.

The Supreme Court ordered its breakup in 1911, spawning companies that became Exxon, Mobil, Chevron, and others.

Standard Oil practices still serves as shorthand for anticompetitive behavior.
