agoge

Ancient Greek guidance

The agoge was the rigorous education and training program for male citizens in ancient Sparta, beginning around age seven.

Boys lived in barracks, endured physical hardships, and learned military skills, discipline, and survival.

The term now appears in discussions of extreme training regimens or harsh upbringing: The coach ran his program like an agoge.
