South Georgia

Subantarctic British territory

South Georgia is a remote, mountainous island in the southern Atlantic Ocean, a British Overseas Territory lying about 800 miles east-southeast of the Falkland Islands.

The island is mostly glaciated and uninhabited except for research stations.

It gained attention during the 1982 Falklands War when Argentine forces briefly occupied it.

South Georgia is known for its large populations of penguins, seals, and seabirds, and as the final resting place of explorer Ernest Shackleton.
