islets

Specks in water

Islets are small islands.

The word appears most often in geographical contexts describing clusters of tiny landmasses: The bay is dotted with rocky islets.

In anatomy, the islets of Langerhans are clusters of cells in the pancreas that produce insulin and other hormones—so called because they appear as isolated islands of tissue.
