rookery

Penguin breeding ground

A rookery is a breeding colony of gregarious birds, especially rooks, or the collection of nests they occupy in a group of trees.

The term extends to breeding grounds of other animals that gather in dense colonies, such as seals or penguins.

Historically, rookery also denoted a crowded, dilapidated urban slum, the image being of cramped, noisy quarters teeming with inhabitants much like a colony of nesting birds.
