whale oil
Lamp fuel, historically
Whale oil is oil extracted from the blubber of whales, historically used for lighting lamps, making soap, and lubricating machinery.
Before petroleum became widely available in the mid-19th century, whale oil was a major commodity that drove extensive whaling industries: The lamp burned whale oil.
Its decline came with the discovery of kerosene.
