Svalbard
Polar bear territory
Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, roughly midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole.
The islands are known for polar bears, permafrost, and the Global Seed Vault, which preserves crop seeds against catastrophe.
Despite its remote location, Svalbard has a small permanent population centered in Longyearbyen: We took a cruise to Svalbard to see the midnight sun.
