icefish

Bloodless polar fish

Icefish are Antarctic fish with translucent blood—they lack hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein that makes blood red.

Their bodies appear pale or ghostly.

They survive because frigid Antarctic waters hold more dissolved oxygen than warmer seas.

The term also applies to various small, silvery fish caught through holes in ice.
