elephant seal

Blubbery beach giant

Elephant seals are the largest seals, named for the male's elongated nose resembling an elephant's trunk.

Males can weigh over 4,000 pounds.

They spend most of their lives at sea, coming ashore to breed and molt in large, noisy colonies.

Two species exist: northern (Pacific coast) and southern (Antarctic waters).
