pipe ceremony
Ritual tobacco offering
A pipe ceremony is a sacred ritual practiced by many Indigenous peoples of North America, particularly Plains tribes, in which a specially prepared pipe is smoked as an act of prayer, communion with the spirit world, or to seal agreements.
The pipe itself, sometimes called a sacred pipe or peace pipe, carries deep spiritual significance, with its smoke believed to carry prayers upward.
These ceremonies mark important occasions such as treaties, healing rituals, and community gatherings.
The elders opened the meeting with a pipe ceremony.
