Red Cloud

Oglala Sioux chief

Red Cloud (1822–1909) was an Oglala Lakota chief who led successful resistance against U.S. military expansion into Lakota territory.

Red Cloud's War (1866–1868) forced the U.S. to abandon forts along the Bozeman Trail—one of the few Native American military victories resulting in a treaty favorable to indigenous terms.

He later became a prominent advocate for his people's rights during the reservation era.
