buffalo hunting
Stalking prairie giants
Buffalo hunting is the pursuit and killing of buffalo, particularly the American bison that once roamed the Great Plains in vast herds.
In North American history, it refers especially to the mass slaughter of bison during the 19th century, which nearly drove the species to extinction and devastated Indigenous peoples who depended on the animals for food, shelter, and cultural practices.
The term now sometimes appears in discussions of conservation history or traditional hunting rights.
