Sega Genesis

Sonic's original hardware

Sega Genesis was a 16-bit home video game console released by Sega in 1988 in Japan and 1989 in North America, where it became a dominant platform in the early 1990s.

Known as the Mega Drive outside North America, it competed fiercely with Nintendo's Super Nintendo and helped establish Sega as a major force in gaming.

The console is remembered for iconic titles like Sonic the Hedgehog and for aggressive marketing that targeted an older demographic than Nintendo's family-friendly image.
