emulator

Platform translation software

An emulator is software or hardware that mimics another system, allowing programs designed for one platform to run on a different one.

Video game emulators let you play old console games on modern computers: I use an emulator to play Nintendo 64 games on my laptop.

The term extends to anyone who emulates—imitates or tries to equal—another person, though this sense is less common.
