Rhodesia

Zimbabwe, before independence

Rhodesia was a British-controlled territory in southern Africa that existed under various names from 1895 to 1980.

The name honored Cecil Rhodes, the British imperialist who colonized the region.

After a white-minority government declared independence from Britain in 1965, Rhodesia became internationally isolated and fought a guerrilla war against Black nationalist movements.

The conflict ended in 1980 when the country became the independent nation of Zimbabwe under majority rule.
