native reserves
Designated tribal lands
Native reserves are tracts of land set aside by colonial or national governments for indigenous peoples, often as a result of treaties, forced relocations, or policies of segregation.
The term appears most commonly in Canadian, Australian, and South African contexts.
In the United States, the equivalent is usually called a reservation.
The history of native reserves is bound up with dispossession—land was "reserved" for indigenous people only after the rest had been taken: The government confined them to native reserves far from their ancestral territories.
