Republic of Korea
Seoul's sovereign nation
The Republic of Korea is the official name of South Korea, the country occupying the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula.
It is distinguished from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) to the north.
In diplomatic and formal contexts, Republic of Korea or the abbreviation ROK appears where casual speech would use South Korea.
